Popular choices include classic pastel colours, floral or rustic setups, favourite storybooks, or playful themes like “Wild One,” “Berry Sweet,” or “Two Sweet.” If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to suggest ideas based on your child’s personality and your preferred style. I can even send you a catalogue with all the themes I’ve built.

👗 Picking the Perfect Outfit

Outfits should be cute, comfy, and something you don’t mind getting a little messy! I recommend soft, breathable fabrics and avoiding large logos or distracting patterns. Many parents choose themed outfits like tutus, rompers, or diaper covers. You can bring your own, or I can recommend vendors who create adorable cake smash outfits.

📸 Studio vs. Outdoor Sessions

Cake smash sessions can be done in the studio or outdoors, depending on the look you love — and the weather! Studio sessions are cozy and weather-proof, with controlled lighting and a wide selection of props and backdrops. Outdoor shoots offer a natural setting and are best in mild, dry weather. Because KZN weather can be unpredictable, we’ll keep an eye on the forecast and have a backup plan if needed.

🧁 What to Expect During the Session

The session typically starts with a few clean portraits of your little one before the cake comes out — these are perfect for capturing smiles and personality! Then we move on to the cake smash, where your baby gets to explore, touch, taste, and smoosh their cake. Sessions are relaxed and baby-led, so we go at your child’s pace to keep things fun and comfortable.

• Cake from a trusted local baker (or you can bring your own)

Cake smash sessions are focused on the baby, but one or two parents or caregivers are welcome to attend and help behind the scenes. If you’d like a quick family photo at the start, just let me know ahead of time!

🎒 What to Bring as a Client

Here’s a quick checklist to help you prepare:

• A towel and clean clothes for the baby after the splash session
• Extra wipes and nappies
• A snack or toy your baby loves (for comfort or distraction)
• Any special outfit or heirloom item you’d like photographed

Optional: A change of clothes for yourself — things can get messier than you think!

After the cake smash, we wrap up with a fun mini splash session. Babies love it, and it helps clean off the frosting while capturing more adorable moments. I use gentle, baby-safe products — but let me know if your baby has any allergies or skin sensitivities.

⚠️ Cake Ingredients & Allergies

Your child’s safety is top priority. If your baby has any known allergies (especially to eggs, dairy, or food colouring), please let me know in advance. You’re welcome to bring your own allergy-friendly cake — I’ll still provide the full themed setup and props.

Not quite ready for a cake smash yet? Consider booking a 6-month milestone session! These “halfway to one” shoots are great for capturing tummy time, first smiles, and personality. They’re a perfect lead-in to your cake smash and a sweet way to track your baby’s growth.
